Let’s Learn Together.

Children who’ve been exposed to traumatic experiences, chronic stress, and disruptions in attachment often struggle with emotional and behavioral regulation, and interpersonal relationships. Research shows that without the ability to reliably self-regulate, there is minimal, if any, access to the centers in the brain responsible for connection, language, learning, and problem-solving.

Sensory Motor Arousal Regulation Treatment (SMART) is an innovative “bottom-up” therapy for complexly traumatized children that does not rely on language and awareness as an entry point. By engaging the sensory motor systems, especially the vestibular, proprioceptive, and tactile systems, through the use of sensory equipment and embodied play, children find somatic regulation.

Through greater regulation new skills emerge real-time for building attachment with parents and carers, and a coherent narrative will often spontaneously emerge allowing traumatic material to be safely processed.
